Practical Life
Practical life exercises are an essential part of the classroom and form a comforting link between home and school. Performance of these simple, everyday activities meets the child’s need for independence and coordination while fostering self-esteem.
Sensorial Education
Sensorial education activities help children make sense of the impressions they receive from the world around them. Exploring with sensorial materials develops and refines the child’s senses while providing a necessary foundation for mathematics and writing.
Mathematics
Mathematics materials provide a concrete understanding of number concepts and operations. Children explore the two aspects of numbers, quantity and symbol, with opportunities for further discovery of the decimal system and basic operations.
Language
Language development is fostered through self-expression, lessons and freedom of conversation. Children learn phonetic letter sounds, which enables word-building and the start of reading. Practical Life and Sensorial activities also prepare muscles for writing.
Culture
Cultural materials, including geography, history, zoology, botany, and science, open the child's eyes to the diverse world around them. Our Casa curriculum also includes regular opportunities for music, art, physical education, and local field trips.

Nutrition and Meals
We provide a hot, catered, and nutritious lunch for all full-day Casa students. We are a nut-aware zone and prioritize the health and safety of every child. Daily snacks are provided by parents on a rotating basis, fostering a sense of community contribution.
Clothing and Comfort
Unlike our older levels, Casa students are not required to wear uniforms. We encourage children to wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that allows them to move freely and engage in practical life activities independently.
Extended Care
To support working families, we offer care beyond regular school hours.
- Before School: 8:00 am to 8:30 am.
- After School (Wood Glen Campus): 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm.
- After School (Beach Campus): 3:45 pm to 6:00 pm.
Communication and Partnership
We believe families are experts on their children. To ensure a seamless connection between home and school, we provide various tools for regular communication with our families, keeping you updated on what is happening with your child in the classroom. We also offer Parent Information Nights to help you understand the Montessori journey and your child’s developmental milestones.

Middle School at Avalon
Learning isn’t just about memorizing facts—it’s about understanding the world around us and finding your voice within it.
In our Middle School, students explore real-world issues and current events, think critically about what they see and hear, and learn to express their ideas thoughtfully and respectfully.
Today, students examined Justin Trudeau’s apology for residential schooling and then put their learning into practice, exploring what makes an apology meaningful and writing one of their own.
This is Montessori education for the middle school years: curious, connected, challenging and purposeful.

Back to school tip. Choose shoes that your child is able to manage independently. If possible, have your child try them on before buying them. Practice, practice, practice at home to help your child gain confidence as they prepare to head to school. This is true for kids who are just starting school and also for those who are returning. Common Questions
Do you offer a Casa program at both locations (Wood Glen & Beach)?
Yes, we offer the same Casa program at both locations. While the programming is the same, the licensing and hours of operation are different. Our Wood Glen location is a licensed childcare centre for children ages 2.4-6 and is open from 8 am to 5 pm. Our Casa Program at the Beach campus is for JK/SK-age students (3.8-6 years) and is open from 8 am to 6 pm.
Do you offer a middle school program?
We do not offer a summer program. We follow the traditional school calendar and are open from September to June. There are summer program providers in the area for families to choose from.
What is the best age to start at a Montessori Casa school in Toronto?
The Casa program is designed for children between 2 ½ and 6 years. Maria Montessori coined the term “absorbent mind” for this stage of development because the child’s mind is like a sponge. The Montessori materials are designed to foster and develop the child’s skills during these peak sensitive periods for learning. This is the optimal time to enroll.
Does my child need to be potty-trained?
Children enrolling in our Wood Glen Casa Program do not need to be fully toilet-trained. However, children enrolling in our Beach Casa Program are required to be fully toilet-trained and wearing underwear before they enroll.
Do Casa students wear uniforms?
Unlike our Elementary and Middle School students, students in the Casa Program are not required to wear uniforms. We encourage children to wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that allows them to move freely and practice dressing themselves independently.
Is there a nap or rest time for Casa students?
Yes. We provide a quiet rest period for children who require it based on their developmental needs. As children grow and no longer need to nap, they transition into an afternoon Montessori work period to continue their exploration.
How do you communicate with families about their child’s day?
We believe in transparent communication to help families feel at ease. We provide a Homebook for each child to update you weekly on their classroom experiences. Our staff also use an app to share photos and messages.
What are the options for enrolment?
We aim to support the unique needs of our families by offering both full-time and part-time options (three full days or five half days). Our standard school day runs from 8:30 am to 3:45 pm, with before and after-school care available.
Is a hot lunch provided for Casa students?
A nutritionally balanced hot lunch provided by Yummy Catering is included in the tuition for all full-time Casa students. We are a nut-aware environment and strictly manage dietary restrictions and allergies. Parents are responsible for providing daily snacks on a rotating basis.
Is there a trial period for new students?
Yes. Every child is admitted on a trial period of one month. This allows the teachers and the family to ensure the program is the right fit for the child’s needs and that they are transitioning comfortably into our school community.
Can I visit the school before enrolling?
Absolutely. We believe an observation is the best way to understand the Avalon difference. We invite prospective parents to schedule a tour or attend one of our open houses to see our prepared environment in action and meet our educators.
