“The loving and curious staff at Avalon took both our kids under their wings instantaneously and provided safety and security for our kids in their transition into Canadian life. Common Questions
Do you have a Casa program at the Elementary School (Beach Campus)?
Yes, we offer a Casa program for JK/SK students (3.8-6 years) at our Beach campus located at 65 Glen Manor Drive.
What is the difference between locations (Wood Glen vs. Beach)?
Our Wood Glen campus is a licensed childcare centre for children ages 2.5-6 years. Our Beach campus is a private Elementary School for children in JK to grade 8. All Casa students may attend the Elementary School upon graduation.
How do you handle grades and assessments?
We offer a non-competitive environment without letter grades or standardized tests such as EQAO. Children learn through self-correction and intrinsic motivation, focusing on their developmental progress rather than performance pressure.
How does the school keep my child safe?
As a proud member of the Ontario Federation of Independent Schools (OFIS), we meet high standards of safety and academic accountability. Our small community ensures every child is supervised by teachers who know them well.
What are the benefits of multi-age classrooms?
Our Lower and Upper Elementary environments allow children to spend three years with the same teacher. This builds deep trust and creates a village atmosphere where older students naturally mentor younger peers, fostering leadership and community.
How do you support students who learn differently?
Avalon is an inclusive school. The Montessori curriculum allows students to work at their own pace while supported by teachers who ensure each student is challenged to their ability and finds success to build upon. Classrooms have quiet areas and promote movement. We offer a predictable structure and keep a daily schedule on our classroom whiteboards.
Does the curriculum meet Ontario standards?
Yes. While we have the freedom to follow the child’s interests, we consistently meet and exceed provincial guidelines. We ensure students have a strong foundation in core academics while enjoying enriched opportunities for French, the Arts, and physical education.
What happens after Elementary?
Upon completion of the Elementary component, students transition to our Middle School, which serves as a unique bridge to high school for Grades 7 and 8.
